Discussion:
Selespeed doctor?

Hi

I am wondering if anyone has ever had their Selespeed problems fully
resolved?

My 156SW also has a clutch that doesn't always close, but this is from a
rolling start rather than when it changes down. Still bad enough when you
roll onto a busy roundabout with the engine revving fit to burst and a truck
bearing down on you.

Anyone know of a good selespeed doctor in southern England - my dealer seems
hopelessly lost other than doing resets and line tests.

Thanks
Rob.

Hi Rob,
What year is your car?
Has it has the software update "campaign 4407" installed?
Do you check the Selespeed oil level weekly?
When you "roll onto a busy roundabout" are you in "City" mode?

Hi David

It's a phase 3 from 2001 and has had a software update, not sure if it's
4407 though.
The problems are more likely to occur in manual mode, but do happen in city,
too.

The oil level? Ooops! But then the dealer has never actually said the
level was low or charged me for any to go in it. It's worth having a look
though.

The car is booked in for another line test and reset on Monday, if there are
any pointers I can give them, it would be appreciated.

Hi Rob,
it is worth checking the Selespeed oil level.
(you should be doing this weekly at the same time as you check the engine
oil)
To check the Selespeed oil level:

Open Bonnet!
Remove the Vent Tube from the Selespeed oil tank cap
Turn on the ignition (but do not start the engine)
Wait until the Selespeed pump stops (the level will be at it's lowest point
then)
Open the Selespeed tank cap
clean the dip stick
Place the cap on top of the tank and turn anti-clockwise one turn
Remove and check the level.

There is only 0.6L of oil in the system, so you don't need to loose a lot
before it becomes a problem.
Re the type of fluid to use:
It is a VERY high spec ATF fluid, the std "Selenia CS Speed" fluid can be
difficult to obtain, I now use Redline D4 ATF fluid which is an even higher
spec ATF fluid available from www.demon-tweeks.co.uk .

As for things for the garage to look at:
They should check & adjust the "clutch control push rod"
If the Selespeed oil level has run low, air could have got into the system
so they should bleed it.
(requires connection to the Examiner system).
Then run "Service/End of line self-calibration"
Then run "Clutch self-calibration"

Oil level does seem low, David - it's just above the min mark.

How much is it reasonable to expect to get used / lost? I'd always thought
of it like brake or clutch fluid and any loss would be from a leak rather
than just natural waste. Anyhow, I'll ask the garage to top it up and
provide a bottle of the stuff.

I'll mention the clutch push rod to them and ask them to get me the results
of the calibrations you mention - I assume that this done by computer and
there should be a diagnostic output. That way they can prove they've done
the work and I can see any adjustments that were needed.

Hi Rob,
in theory (!!) it shouldn't use any fluid...
However, some will be lost down the breather tube, and some through seals in
the Actuator.
As I say there is only 0.6L in the entire system so the drop from Max to Min
on the dipstick isn't very much but it does put you in danger of pulling in
air if the pump operates when you are going round a corner.
Unless you can top it up sooner, corner very gently (especially roundabouts)
until you visit the garage.
(There will also be surge in the reservoir during braking & acceleration)
The bleeding and calibrations are all done with the Examiner system, I'm not
sure what kind of paper outputs are available.

Thanks

They want me to take the mechanic for a drive and demonstrate the problem,
so I think I shall leave all well alone until then.
